Thank you for the review on this piece. It has been collecting dust in my studio...I am now inclined to pull it out and give it a second viewing on the wall during open studios!
Veronica’s Veil requires a second and third viewing to fully appreciate the construction and intent. The illusionistic canvas creates a dynamic but shallow space that cleverly interacts with and undermines the physicality of the installation. The dimensional cloth and wood elements play off against the shadows of the painted drapery; adding a physical layering to the conceptual one. The action of the arm pulling the fabric outside the edge of the picture plane animates the forms and exerts a mood of both control and visual ambiguity. The stronger use of high chroma blue hues in the hair of the figure could be a nod to artifice along with the smudged makeup. But it is most effective aesthetically as it balances out the warm fleshy tones in the makeup and separates the woman in her defining environment.
