Thought Formation

"Curator’s Comments: Thought Formation can be viewed as an exuberant piece in its painterly revelry despite some darker passages. The loose brushwork formally responds to the linear marks, which seem to be broken down interior structures. I…"

Shape Play

"I love the very bold placement with some subtle colors and brights here and there. I am led through the painting by bold gestures, so that all of these little separate elements seem somehow to be one."

"CHROMAWORLD is a new series of work by Mara Safransky. Bridging the gap between wall-bound and sculptural, two-dimensional and three-dimensional, Safransky's abstract, textile-based configurations play with elements of color, texture and form,…"

Universal Principles

"I enjoy the texture and paint handling of this piece. Also, the harmony of the blues give the piece mood.  The red sphere in the lower left corner brings me much joy. Great work."

"Hi Tom, I'd like to understand your point a bit better. Can you expound on what you're saying by citing some specific examples from my posted images? Perhaps you could point out in which piece(s) you see the composition being problematic,…"

Mara Safransky studied fine art at Rhode Island School of Design. Strongly influenced by the work of the Abstract Expressionists, she uses color, shape and movement to examine issues of perception and experience, encouraging a meditative approach that offers a respite from our habitual way of interfacing with the world.

It’s Safransky’s goal to liberate the viewer from their critical, overly-analytic sensibilities and instead engage them in a subjective and freely associative experience. For her, painting is an opportunity to move beyond the constraints of the rigid thinking mind and into a state where spontaneity and reflex dictate her course.

Mara Safransky works from her Los Angeles-based studio. She is a member of Gallery 825 and Women Painters West. Her work is held in private collections and she has exhibited in Los Angeles, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, and New Zealand.

Hi Mara:  You work displays some interesting surfaces, but I see a rather consistent compositional tendency to divide you picture plane in half in either direction or to halve it from corner to corner.  This can work, but it presents some challenges that most artists I know try to avoid.  This potential challenge is, at least for me, an unfortunate intuitive unintentional decision that I only realize late in the creative process.
