"Thanks, Laurel.  I'm trying to get my drawing skills up to snuff; I want a career in art, not Burger King.  I'm going to school for Game Art and Design at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, but my main focus is on traditional art…"

"Thank you very much for your critique, Ms. Resident Curator!  I am much more confident in drawing fantastical creatures and have only recently begun to work on more academic drawings.  This drawing of the upper 1% is a favorite. …"

"Curator’s Comment:   This piece seems especially relevant in context of Occupy Wall Street.   But while I am enamored with its not so subtle message, I believe it also encapsulates your strengths as a “drawer”.…"

Cool! I'm very much in support of your goals, it'll make your work more unique and flexible. I don't know how much your school emphasizes life drawing, but if they don't, I recommend the self-training described by J. Aristides in her book Classical Drawing Atelier: 1-copying black & white photos, 2-drawing from casts in B&W, 3-drawing from color photos, 4-drawing from live models. Copying may sound boring, but it develops your eye, and you may find it's fun to replicate your favorite masterpieces, I did. It's the way all masters started.

LIfelike Heads by Lance Richlin is also a terrific resource.

Thanks very much for your compliment. I aim for 3-dimensinal illusions, and to make my people look like they're breathing by finding the beauty in them. I hope this helps, and please ask questions any time.

I'm not knowledgable about animation characters, someone else for sure can advise/help you on those. All the best, Laurel
