Curator’s Comments:

This recently posted piece entitled Utero sets up a dreamy Surrealist landscape intermingling biological and celestial birth. The overall dark blue color palette creates a somber mood, despite the amorous portrayal of the (reproducing) pair in the foreground.  I first read the red embryonic form as a balloon- or a heart shape signaling romance above the couple.  I wonder if the vast, starry environment is intended to imply a quixotic coupling, or a universal life cycle.   I also appreciate the placement of the subjects slightly off center within the composition, giving the space a sense of a wider expanse. The abstraction of the couples, which includes their shared stylized androgyny, adds an element of mystery for me.  The circular and transparent bubbles could depict cells or sperm- but perhaps my read of the painting is too literal, prompted by the title.
