These are incredibly refined, extraordinarily engaged drawings.  The more graphic and contorted subjects- and guns- remind me of Robert Longo.  But there is a level of resolve in this particular work that while less severe and forceful in subject, has a disquieting determination.   The stark white grounds sets off the disengagement of the figure from his “natural” surrounds, as implied by the title. His forward leaning posture on the dwarf tricycle is absurd, but the hyper-realism also implies an underlying, if not subverted solemnity.  I imagine the drawing’s surface to be smooth and skin-like because of the graphite medium on mylar ground, but the minute irregularities and exhaustive detail provide particularized individualism.  Cape’s Divide also has a strained tension in the dubious normalcy of the male figure, with his slight handicaps or malfunctions. The arm brace psychologically puts into question his strength and ability to adjust to minor calamity- one sock on; one off.  I picture the physical and cognitive disconnect is also emphasized by the substantial, larger than life scale.
