The organic fluidity and actual threads moving through these pieces create a sensitive interplay between contrast and harmony. While it’s difficult to decipher the physical relationship between the paintings’ fields and the machine embroidery even in the detail shots, I do appreciate the ready exchange between smooth dappled surfaces and sharper texture. Whether drawn linear marks or thread, there’s a simple elegance to the thin black lines and very light ground; a quiet softness is seen in the handling of the shapes and color. Rhythm is especially pleasing in its pale complementary palette, but I don’t detect an obvious repetition of form that is implied in the work’s title. The pale blue-violet amorphous shape in the bottom right of the composition actually appears to be a formal echo of the similar yellow-green shape. The thin diagonal line that connects them enhances the sensation of residue or haptic resonance. I also prefer the open value pattern, particularly along the perimeters of the painting. It maintains an airy and light mood, and also intimates a small grouping broken out from a larger alliance or defined communal whole.
