Curator’s Comments:

Coming across your full color figurative paintings today, I appreciate your unmistakable delight in the oddities of the human body. Quartet beautifully plays up these individual distortions while allowing the viewer voyeuristic entry into the space.  While the headless figures exist in a surreal environment placing their (or others) heads and shoulders at their feet, one of the stranger elements that draws my attention is the small blue underwear worn by the far left figure.  The inclusion of this (too) small piece of clothing is jarring, pulling our mindset away from classical nudes into a realm of artifice and exaggeration.  The body strains under the fabric, humorously causing tension between reality and expectation.  In this way the work reminds me of John Currin.  But there are some elements performing less clear roles in the scene; the black cords wind through the quartet, splicing through the bottom right figure, and resulting in a disembodied upper torso.  This figure’s red eye adds to the mystery, whether cosmetic or depicting prior damage.
