La Lucha is a strong gestural work. The strain of the musculature is felt in the pose. The back view of the body is beautifully highlighted with cool blue hues that read as reflected light. However, I do wonder if the hazy dark tones throughout provide an accurate depiction of the original work. The softness suggests a pastel drawing more than oil on canvas. The title of the piece is also interesting, as the “fight” contains a single figure. Perhaps this references internal conflict, or one position in a larger figural narrative.
