Curator’s Comments:

Fragmenti Romani XV caught my attention because of the intriguing manipulation of the media in the small interstices between the many decorative figures.  The piece generally reads as abstract from afar- only with closer inspection does the viewer make out the full complexity of the portraits and costumes within the activity of the expressive ground.   I also see the warm umber tones as imparting gritty scumbled veneer.  Rust tones intermix with pink and green patinas in the painting.  The consistent intensity of the visual movement and cropping of the edges of the picture suggests– as the title implies- that the piece is a fragment of a larger whole.   The numerical designation also makes me wonder if this is a series of a larger body of work.  I’d love to see more variations on the theme.
