While all of your still life paintings breathe fresh life into simple objects and fruit, I’m most captivated by Eggcup because of its pale complementary color palette. The smooth paint strokes of creamsicle orange, milky white and sky blue create harmony and some subtly contrasted dissonance. Possibly because of the food oriented subject, this piece in particular reminds me of Wayne Thiebauld’s cake paintings in the way the warmer blue-violet shadow wraps around the bottom edge of the plate. There also seems to be a slight shift in perspective in the way the egg cup is presented straight-on at relative eye level, while the plate and utensils have a decidedly more aerial orientation. Eggs, Oranges is a more classically rendered painting, offering rich local color and textural surfaces. The background is also of interest in its unusual tonal modulation. While medium isn’t indicated, it curiously appears to be a combination/separation of oil and water, or abraded articulation from an encaustic process. While technically handled quite differently from the objects in the foreground, it nevertheless provides atmospheric perspective, and nicely recedes in the shallow picture plane.
