Curator’s Comments:

Hay Making came up randomly on the site for me today, and I was attracted to the quilt-like compartmentalization of decorative space.  The many small figures on the larger open ground have a distinctly folk art feel to them, but the overarching pink color palette is quite unexpected. I enjoy the patterning of the dotted landscape, and the manner in which the atmospheric perspective is actually reversed, bringing the contrast of the upper portion of the painting up to the same level as the foreground.  The light, cool pink lines on top of the deeper salmon pink also creates a pleasurable value shift. Looking at the architecture of the white building structures, the viewer understands them in classic two-point linear perspective.  There is nothing naïve about their rendering. The painting is a wonderful fusion of a folk sensibility with a contemporary aesthetic.
