Great Lakes Stream is a rather forceful landscape compared to the quieter pieces you have on the site. While I enjoy the somber, and almost melancholy mood of drawings such as Maine Coast, this work really holds me in the space. The top yellow-green portion of the painting reads as either sky or the continuation of the rising tides; the ambiguity is part of the attraction. The color palette pushes the expectations of local color, as the lower chroma green deepens the atmospheric space. It's a sophisticated handling of the transparencies and opacity of the water medium. The smoother less active white bottom stabilizes these active marks, while moving the viewer out to the thin, outermost blue edge.
