Dohna Germany came up in a random image search today, and I find myself contemplating its enticing greenish cast suggestive of an aged oil patina, despite the recent date. While the horizon bisects the space almost in half, and the tallest structure juts out in the center, it doesn’t entirely offer a restful mood in its special organization. While the town depicted is rather idyllic, the saturation of the unexpected green hues in the sky that spill into the ground muddle the time of day and light. I also find it interesting that the sky provides a painterly heaviness that balances the complexity o the visual weight of the landscape. Formally, the reddish tops of the houses also offer a bold complement to the pervasive green glaze. It is a painting that is appreciated with longer viewing.
