Curator’s Comment:
I completely agree with the other artists' statements. But this image evoked an inexplicable deju vu feeling for me, until I recognized the association this morning. It seems there are more than a few contemporary artists manipulating Victorian cabinet cards to imbue their (forgotten) formal subjects with contemporary attributes through collage and paint- be it stylistic makeovers, or superhero accessories. This image encapsulates a similar juxtaposition of romantic nineteenth century portraiture with edgier representation of artistic/literary subculture. The subjects staring eyes seem painted on behind his round glass frames, echoing the circular studded eye socket design peering back at us from the face on his shirt. The formality of his black top hat is a wonderful counter to the more casual sway in his stance. The contrast between the inky blacks and peeling white paint in the doors architectural frame also creates a bold ground on which to appreciate the smaller details. It’s a striking and memorable image.
Comment by Laurel Sternberg on January 28, 2012 at 1:43pm Terrific and surrealistic, but that's the French Quarter and its denizens.
black and white seems so perfect for this photograph, lots of interesting details & textures to linger over, deep black pants & hat add so much, intriguing model as well..love looking at it.
