Curator’s Comments:

This apparently untitled portrait caught my attention, as it’s an unusual distribution of space and directed gaze.  Utilizing a fairly minimal and streamlined environment, the young subject appears disoriented within the freezer isle at a grocery store.  The expressive color within her face is nicely framed with the deep red ground.  While it may be an unexpected hue choice for the scenario, it presents a lush rather than clinical space.  I also enjoy how the perspective of the freezer cases (hopefully I’ve identified them currently) leads the viewer back through the picture plane, and offsets the visual weight of the figure.  While the painting may just be a formal composition, I read into the expression as a young consumer dazed by a contemporary life of plenty.  Looking back through your other pieces, I was reminded of my wonder for the Nordstrom work.  Perhaps because of the specificity of place, these works inventively tweak the viewers’ consciousness of urban landscapes through sumptuous painting.
